Known as the “Gateway to the Oregon Caves”, Cave Junction is located at the junction of Redwood Highway and Caves Highway in Josephine County. Established in the 1850s as a hub for the Oregon gold rush (the first gold in the state was found at this location), the city of Cave Junction evolved from a small mining town, to a lumber dependent economy, and more recently has become both a haven for retirees as well as a tourist destination.
With an estimated population of 1,954 residents, this small community covers a total area of 1.82 square miles and is served by the Three Rivers School District, which offers local students the services of three schools, including Evergreen Elementary School, Illinois Valley High School, and Lorna Byrne Middle School.
